How fast do you forget a match? What memory research says about post-match notes

Ask any athlete about a painful loss from last season and you’ll get a vivid story. Ask what the score was at the midpoint, what they tried that failed, or what adjustment finally worked — and the story gets vague. That gap between feeling of memory and content of memory is one of the best-documented phenomena in psychology, and it’s the entire case for writing match notes.
The forgetting curve is steep — and it’s been replicated
In 1885, Hermann Ebbinghaus measured his own memory decay and drew the now-famous forgetting curve: retention collapses fastest in the first hours and days, then levels off. Remarkable for a one-man study — and it held up. In 2015, Jaap Murre and Joeri Dros at the University of Amsterdam replicated the experiment under modern controls, publishing in PLOS ONE: the curve’s shape was confirmed, with the steepest losses inside the first day.
Translated to sport: the tactical detail of a match — the pattern that kept scoring, the moment you solved their game, the thing you promised to fix — is at its most complete in the hour after the final point, and measurably degraded by the weekend. A note written match-side and a note written “when I get around to it” are not the same note.
Your most confident memories aren’t your most accurate
The intuitive objection: “I don’t forget important matches.” The research says otherwise — what survives is confidence, not accuracy. In a classic study, Jennifer Talarico and David Rubin tracked memories of September 11, 2001 against memories of an ordinary day, retesting people up to 32 weeks later. Published in Psychological Science, the result: emotionally charged memories decayed just as fast as mundane ones — but people’s belief in their vividness and accuracy stayed high only for the emotional ones.
For an athlete, that’s a trap with consequences. The dramatic loss produces a memory that feels like video footage but has quietly rewritten itself — usually in whatever direction the emotion pointed. You’ll prepare for the rematch against the opponent your frustration remembers, not the one you actually played. A written record made that day is the only version of events that doesn’t edit itself.
Re-reading your notes is training, not just reference
There’s a second, less obvious payoff. Cognitive psychology’s “testing effect” — established in a 2006 Psychological Science study by Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke — showed that actively retrieving information beats passively restudying it for long-term retention. In their experiments, students who recalled material retained substantially more a week later than students who simply reread it.

- Review actively before competing. Read the page, then recall it. Retrieval is what makes it stick.
